Wow fab news I want to share about my next dyslexia project

We #dyslexics are #fabtastic lateral thinkers

Hi blog readers hope you are all well

A few weeks ago I applied for a place on the Active Citizen social leadership programme. I heard today I have been accepted.

This week, we’re excited to announce that Know You More has partnered with the British Council to deliver their social leadership training programme ‘Active Citizens’.

We will be bringing together 30 people from different backgrounds and perspectives to learn from and share with each other. The participants from across Scotland will be trained in the skills and knowledge needed to affect social change in their communities.

The programme is fully funded and has been delivered to nearly a quarter of a million people across 68 countries. It connects thousands of like-minded people around the World who collectively want to make a fairer and more inclusive society.

Alongside the training, and a key aspect of the programme is each Active Citizen delivering a social action initiative in their community. The focus of initiatives will be tackling the environmental problem of plastic waste. There will be more news to follow but we’re looking forward to partnering with a number experts in the field of plastics and waste.

International Study Visits

The Active Citizens programme also creates opportunities for a number of participants to take part in International Study Visits. Again fully funded, it is the experience of a lifetime to see social action in other cultures and meet up with Active Citizens from across the world.

We’re looking forward to hosting our very own group of international Active Citizens and sharing the incredible social activity here in Scotland.

The impact Active Citizens will deliver:

An empowered and skilled community of Active Citizens delivering social change across Scotland

Mulitple social action initiatives that can be systemized and replicated in other communities

Each initiative to directly benefit 50 people in the local community

Influence and inspire a further 30 people to start their own initiative
1 social initiative going on to become a sustainable social enterprise

I plan to use this opportunity to benefit dyslexics living in Fife.

Evaluation and monitoring of the community and environmental impact.

This programme is a fantastic opportunity for any dyslexic or neuro diverse person. Seek it out and see what's going on and maybe even apply for it. Lots of hands on and group work,

#PeaceLoveGroovyness to you all

only 7% of dyslexics believe society is doing enough to enable us

#dyslexia a difference that reflects #diversity #vivaladifference

The medical model of #dyslexia tells us we are disabled, our society shows us we are disabled.

In the end many of us become a self fulfilling prophecy and believe we are disabled.

The social model of #dyslexia say society #disables. Just ask #dyslexics how society does this.

But if society can disable us it can also enable us. Just ask #dyslexics how society can do or has done this?

A couple years back my organisation Dyslexia Pathways CIC, 'Community Interest Company' carried out a wee bit of #dyslexia research. We asked dyslexics to share their thoughts on being dyslexic.

How would you answer the questions bellow?

Do you think enough is being done to enable dyslexics to succeed in education, training for work or in employment?

93% said not enough is being done
7% said yes

Well looks like more work needs to be done by all dyslexia organisation, schools, colleges, governments and employers.

What one thing would you like to say about being dyslexic?

Here are some of the responses form this question:

I think differently to most people and my cognitive performance is in the 99.8 percentile.

It may take me a while to get the information in but I can work magic once it is

Its amazing just try it

Think creatively

Worse things can happen it shaped me

We need more help and acceptance

I am unique

I am just me, nothing is seriously wrong, I just see things differently, different does not have to be bad

I don't like others telling me what works and what doesn't, its different for each of us

I have the ability to see what others dream of and live my life in the moment

I am happy dyslexic I fit into a group better than being called slow or dumb

For every succeeder there are a thousand suffers

It has given me a creative twist on the way I see the world

I don't want to hide it I want to celebrate and share my gifts

I am not stupid and being diagnosed confirmed it

So following on from this I have a couple questions for you.

What would your answers be to the questions we asked?

What would be the one piece of advice you would give to other #dyslexics?

many thanks for reading much appreciated

Dyslexia, and healing the emotional wounds from school

Hi blog readers

Music has been a part of my life practically all of my life. I think I was maybe about 6 years old when my school gave me a violin to play. Gawd, I played Good King  Wencleslass for the Christmas nativity. Frightened cats for miles around with it lil.

I got into bands toured around music festivals travelled with the Peace Convoy for a few summers when ever I could maybe 1979 to 87. Dropped out and tuned in as they used to say lol.

I still have one of my guitars and a bass guitar from my old music days. I'd written a new album a while back using my computer. Unfortunately, my computer no longer functions and my music software does not work on my laptop ouch.

Music was good for me as a dyslexic. Helped me with my self confidence, self esteem and mental health.

All dyslexics need to explore and find things to do that can touch our souls and heal the wounds many of us have from our school days.

Anyway thought I would post my current fave song on you tube. What's your fave track of the moment? Love the feel of this tune.

We dyslexics love the feel of things, things that touch our souls and hearts.  Why not share it with me and post a you tube link in the comments.
