Unique Dyslexic news and the rest lol

Hi blog readers where ever you are.......hope you have all had a great week. I on the other hand have been ill all week, I have been unable to sleep because of the illness and its knocked be bandy for the last 10 days or so lol. I have been to the doc and got some antibiotics which seem to be working. Got a few hours of uninterrupted sleep last night so that's a start. The real down side is its cost me a week of lost business something which I can ill afford to happed. Still these things happen and I am aiming to get back to my dyslexia support work next week.

I have still been doing some work on the Unique Dyslexic project. I have been putting together some content mainly and working with the web developer to get the design of the logo and site finished.

As you can see its not too different from the old logo ideas but I think this is the best version yet. I have asked to web developer for a version where the nique and yslexic are a little more bolder but that's really quite a minor change.

The link below takes you to the front page design as it is now. I am happy with most of it apart from the  background colour. It looks fine to be but I am looking at it through my colour blind eyes lol. Any advice here would be appreciated.

of dyslexic individuals across the full range of
creative spectrum

We invite anyone who is dyslexic, or thinks they are
dyslexic, to join the project and share their creative
ideas here including:

games designers, improvisers, information
technology geeks, inventors, film makers, musicians,
photographers, poets,, song writers, story tellers,
writers and visionaries.

You do not have to be diagnosed as dyslexic and we
welcome dyspraxic, dyscalculic, AD(H)D and
Aspergers) individuals to share their creative talents
on the Unique Dyslexic site also.

You are invited to join our Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/unique.dyslexic/
Dyslexia Pathways CIC and our Unique Dyslexic
Project actively support and promote the social
model of dyslexia and disability.

We would argue that dyslexia is an experience
that arises out of natural human diversity on
the one hand and a world on the other where
the early learning of literacy, and good personal
organisation and working memory is mistakenly
used as a marker of ‘intelligence’. The problem
here is seeing difference incorrectly as ‘deficit’.

We believe that dyslexia is not a disability, that it is a
difference that reflects the diversity inherent within
humanity.

Our Unique Dyslexic web site will be launched
within the next two weeks

some interesting news on dyslexia as a difference and not a disability

Here is some interesting news for all you creative dyslexics out there. There is a link between dyslexic and creativity which is the whole reasoning behind developing the Unique Dyslexic Project.

About a year ago Dr Beverley Steffart, a psychologist who works in dyslexic assessment carried out one of the first studies in this country into the link between dyslexia and creative ability.

The college authorities had some concerns about high levels of dyslexia among students. Her remarkable findings so far are that around 75% of the 360 foundation-year students assessed had a form of dyslexia.

Dr Steffart developed six tests of verbal, written and spatial ability for the foundation course .

The results showed that typical student was intellectually gifted. That the majority of them were doing well enough to put them in the top 10 per cent of the population. The most interesting showed their visual spatial skills were also at a superior level. However, they had many problems with reading, writing and spelling.

The report supports the idea that dyslexics have different brains  and that difference enables dyslexics to see and experience the world  different ways from non-dyslexics.

Dr Steffard said, "My research so far seems to show that there does seem to be a `trade- off' between being able to see the world in this wonderfully vivid and three-dimensional way, and an inability to cope with the written word either through reading or writing," and that she, “fears that there are many dyslexics whose talents have never been discovered. The students here are the lucky ones”.

Now her research indicated that dyslexics had difficulties with reading, writing and spelling. I have to add yes we may have difficulties with these tasks but we can overcome them. Yes dyslexia makes these tasks harder but the fact that many dyslexic kids are not taught in ways that will enable them to to do these taks more effectively in school. Its why so many dyslexic kids fail to achieve at school.

The Unique Dyslexic project is about enabling dyslexics to explore and develop their creative talents.

I watched an article on the news about inventions and that information showed we were making fewer discoveries that anytime in our history.

Data also shows around 35 of dyslexics are entrepreneurs. What is an entrepreneur? An entrepreneur creates a business from nothing based on an idea.

In Scotland we need enable every dyslexic kid to achieve according to their abilities. Todays kids should be tomorrows entrepreneurs as well artists, architects, doctors etc. But only if we enable them to be so.

previous music project

Way way back in 2002 or 2003 I used to be one of the moderators on the official Genesis web site. A thread popped up lamenting the state of the music scene at that time. It became quite a long thread and it gave me an idea.

An idea which became the IDEAS Project. The basic idea was to get musicians to send me tracks they had written and recorded and I would put them together on a CD. I got a great artist, Rachel Tabor from Canada I think, to design and create the cover art.

You can see the cover art here. Manuela Thiel from Germany put together a great web site for the project. I did the production and mixing etc.

Together we put together a 15 track cd with music from musician from all over the world. It was great fun and a real challenge. I will load up some of the music  from the album soon. We put together some great music from some great talent.

I would like to try and do the same again with the Unique Project when I have the time to do so.

NOOOOOO happy birthday to me......AGAIN! and other Unique news stuff

Good morning blog readers. Sigh another milestone is passing today its my birthday eeeeeep oh no not another one already OUCH! lol

Funny how when we are younger we all wanna be older and when we are older we all wanna be younger? One of life's ironies that one. I know I could certainly do with the energy I had as a younger person.

And the conversations are different as well. When I was younger the chat was all about girls, pubs and football. Now its all about the tablets I take, going to the supermarket and how knackered I am lol.

The new Unique Dyslexic web site is bubbling along quite nicely. As is the new logo. Here is the next iteration its still not completed by any means. I much prefer version one. the other two are both no no's. The letters need to look more solid in version one and I am thinking purple and gold rather than purple and orange:

I have a full on dyslexia support day today with 5 students to see.....so can't do any more with the unique project. I wrote a little actions list yesterday.......scared myself to death it was so long........not enough hours in the day.

I am struggling quite a lot financially though because of the time I have to put in moving the Unique project forward. I cannot see as many students and I don't want to even work out how much that is costing me lol.

Still when I was working as a dyslexia and inclusion specialist in colleges so much paper work, so much politics and so many tedious meetings to attend sigh. I miss the teaching bit al lot but none of the other stuff. On the upside the pay was pretty good and regular as well.

No I don't know how much money will be in the bank at the end of the month, I don't have any of the politics and meetings to cope with but I am a lot happier.

Up early again

Its 4 am here in Glenrothes Scotland. Been tossing and turning in bed for the last hour unable to switch my brain off.

So I have come downstairs and fired up my laptop to get some work done.

The Unique web developer sent me a couple drafts of the new update logo I want for the site. Two were a good start and we are going on for the next draft. Have to say Toolkit the web developers have been very good so far.

I have been researching the psychology of colour for the last couple of days. Phew I never knew there was so much to think about lol. Proposed colours of the logo are possibly orange and purple, or gold and purple or blue and gold or gold and orange. No I have to say I am at a bit of a disadvantage here as I am colour blind. I am very colour blind in fact.

Orange calls to mind feelings of excitement, enthusiasm, and warmth.

Purple also represents wisdom and spirituality

Blue calls to mind feelings of calmness or serenity. It is often described as peaceful, tranquil, secure, and orderly.

The color gold is the color of success, achievement and triumph

So what do you think about each of these colour combinations. I think I like gold and purple best so far but we will have to see what they look like in combination and how they look on the website itself.

I have been firing off ideas to them for the last couple day on the general look of the site. Just sent off an email about the general structure of the site.

I will soon be looking for creative material for the Unique site itself. The Unique Project is open for anyone of any ability from someone who just enjoys being creative to aspiring amateur creatives to professional.

When I talk of creativity I am talking across a whole range of different activities including:

comedy, music/song writing, innovation, entrepreneurial activity, story telling/writing, film making, animation, art, IT, poetry, engineering, cooking, problem solving, leadership, sports, dance, architecture, academic innovation, meaningful education....

Even if you do not feel you are creative come and visit the Unique Dyslexic Facebook and see what others are doing. See if it fires up your imagination. You do not have to be dyslexic to get involved. If you are an organisation who support dyslexics, or just interested in creativity or finding out more about dyslexia you are welcome to join the facebook page.

neuro diversity

The Unique Dyslexic Project is about creativity and dyslexia. Its about providing a forum or a hub where people can share the fruits of their creative talents in a friendly and supportive environment.

When I talk of creativity I am talking across a whole range of different activities including:

comedy, music/song writing, innovation, entrepreneurial activity, story telling/writing, film making, animation, art, IT, poetry, engineering, cooking, problem solving, leadership, sports, dance, architecture, academic innovation, meaningful education....

If you are creative and dyslexic and want to share what you do and meet with others like yourself then get involved in the Unique Dyslexic Project.

Lets get together a create a coherent dyslexic community. One challenges the old negative view of dyslexia created by dyslexia and medical specialists to a much more positive social model of dyslexia that celebrates what we are.

But its also about promoting a more positive profile of dyslexia to the dyslexic and non-dyslexic world. A profile that takes the old medical deficit model of dyslexia and throws it in the rubbish bin of history where it belongs.

We promote a social model of dyslexia which tells us that dyslexia is a difference that reflects the neuro diversity that exists within the human race as a whole.

"We would argue that dyslexia is an experience that arises out of natural human diversity on the one hand and a world on the other where the early learning of literacy, and good personal organisation and working memory is mistakenly used as a marker of ‘intelligence’. The problem here is seeing difference incorrectly as ‘deficit’.

Put in practical terms, for example, it is disabling to expect that everyone:

  • thinks in the same way as each other, when dyslexic people are more likely to think visually than verbally (or laterally than logically, or intuitively than deductively….)
  • learns to read in the same way; reading is about accessing meaning, the rest is merely strategy and there is always more than one way to learn anything.
  • makes sense of information in the same way (they don’t, which is why multi-sensory information is easier for everyone to understand).
  • can take in multiple instructions.
  • can learn to take notes while trying to listen.
Many of us who have been made to feel ‘stupid’ by these disabling experiences have adopted ‘dyslexia’ and ‘dyslexic’ as terms of empowerment that confront the deficit model, challenge disabling expectations and requirements, and promotes the many strengths associated with dyslexia such as visual thinking, entrepreneurial skills, vision, creativity, lateral thinking, as well as hands-on and artistic skills."

Dyslexia Pathways CiC news updates

We will soon be launching our new Dyslexia Pathways CiC web site that replaces our old site closed down by our previous web developer. All that needs doing is a bit of tweeking here and there. But this will have to wait a couple of weeks until I have the Unique Dyslexic project stuff done.

The new Dyslexia Pathways CiC site looks far better than the old one and has more functionality. I will be looking to give the site logo a bit of a refresh in the near future.

Have to give a big thanks to Bill Blenman for giving his time and expertise in developing the site. Bill suggested that maybe we should change the name of Dyslexia Pathways CiC to Dyslexia Pathways Scotland CiC. What do you blog readers think of that idea.

The university dyslexia support work has started again. I met with one student who I have been supporting for the last couple of years. When we first met she was really struggling with her studies and her self confidence. Have to say it was a little touch and go if she was going to be able to carry on with her course.

This week she showed me her exam results for her recent exams which were all very high top of the class type marks. She was pleased as punch and so was I. This student has put in a lot of hard work to do this and I am so proud of what she has achieved. If nothing else we dyslexics are very determined individuals.

I had one of those days on Friday. You know those days when no matter what you do it all goes wrong. In the morning for example I couldn't find my meds. Meds I have to take every day of my life sigh. In the end I had to go to my docs wait around for 40 minutes to get a new prescription for more meds and then on down the pharmacy to pick up the med which took another half and hour. All this meant I missed breakfast and by the time I had got my meds I felt quite unwell. I was to late to catch a but to my work and in no real fit state to drive. So in the end I had to cancel my student appointments for the day.

On the Unique Dyslexic front I received an e-mail from an organisation in Fife about running one of the workshops. I have high hopes we will have the first workshop up and running within the next 6 weeks or so all going well that is.

If there is any other organisation interested in hosting one of the creative workshops please contact me at steve_mccue@hotmail.com.
