Books and Comics and being dyslexic

#IAmDyslexic
I have been hooked on H G Wells War of the Worlds since I was nine years. Gave me a passion for science fiction and love of reading. I still go back to it today. I became an avid sci fi reader and, apart from school, the local library was the only place to go for books.

For working class kids like me the local library was the only place to go to access books. Now we have our government closing down libraries. Such a short sighted thing to do.

HG Wells books

Seen all the War of the Worlds movies and series on TV and radio.  I went to one of the first Jeff Wayne's first War of the Worlds first tour a couple times when I lived in London. Unfortunately, I can't afford this new show and I now live in Scotland.

Luckily enough the local library was just a stones throw away. I could see it from my front door in Longberrys Childs Hill London. Then there was always comics the devour when ever I could.

There was super hero comics and sci fi comics etc. Even further back when I was a kid I reading Noddy Books and Thomas the Tank Engine. They all gave me a thirst for reading. My auntie Margaret's father owned / ran a sweetie come newspaper shop just around the corner of my primary school All Saints.

At that time I just thought the way I read was the way everybody read. Missing lines, sentences and paragraphs. My teachers certainly never picked up on and reading issue.

It wasn't until I was 35 that I was assessed as dyslexic. Once I was assessed it all began to make sense. I discovered I had academic ability and achieved a BSc in Geography with Honours. I went on to become a dyslexic, dyslexia and inclusion specialist. I founded the world's first Dyslexia focussed social enterprise Dyslexia Pathways CIC.

Now I have been teaching and providing Dyslexia and inclusion support to college and university students for 35 years now.

Through a dyslexic prism

Hello there blog readers and followers.

As a dyslexic the above graphic resonated with me. I see, make sense of and interact with the world around me through a dyslexic prism.

A dyslexic prism that is unique from any other dyslexic because they make sense and see the world through their own unique dyslexic prisms.

This does not mean we don't understand other dyslexics. This is because we share similar life experiences and had the same barriers to break through all our lives.

The one thing we do share with each other is empathy which is one of our greatest strengths.

Our dyslexic prisms are as incomprehensible to non dyslexics as non dyslexic prisms are to we dyslexics?

True or false what do you think?

Does this even make any sense or resonate with you?

Many thanks for reading

Peace, love and groovyness to you all.

being dyslexic is about diversity and difference not about discrepancy, disorder and deficits

Welcome to my first dyslexia blog of 2020

Why is my organisation Dyslexia Pathways Community Interest Company a social enterprise.

Two reasons why we support and promote the social model of dyslexia. These being  that dyslexic is a life experience and that dyslexia is about diversity and difference.

This is an empowering and inclusive way forward.

Why is Dyslexia Pathways Community Interest Company social enterprise?

From an inclusion perspective there are three models of dyslexia. These are Charity, Medical and Social models.

The charity model of Dyslexia says look at us we are poor dyslexics pity me. It fails to recognise that society has failed us and disempowered us, and thrown us into a reliance on charity.

The medical model tells us dyslexia is about deficits, discrepancy and disorder. Again this model fails to recognise that it is society that has failed us and disempowered us.

These are societies answers to Dyslexia. Neither are positive, empowering or inclusive.

As the social model of dyslexia says, society disables. That dyslexia is about diversity and difference.

The social enterprise is about the dyslexic community doing it for themselves, Dyslexia is not about discrepancy, disorder and deficits it's about diversity and difference. This model tells us it is society that disables and that begins at school. That's why I say #Vivaladifference.

This disabling starts with an education system that marginalises and fails far to many or us.
