being dyslexic is about diversity and difference not about discrepancy, disorder and deficits

Welcome to my first dyslexia blog of 2020

Why is my organisation Dyslexia Pathways Community Interest Company a social enterprise.

Two reasons why we support and promote the social model of dyslexia. These being  that dyslexic is a life experience and that dyslexia is about diversity and difference.

This is an empowering and inclusive way forward.

Why is Dyslexia Pathways Community Interest Company social enterprise?

From an inclusion perspective there are three models of dyslexia. These are Charity, Medical and Social models.

The charity model of Dyslexia says look at us we are poor dyslexics pity me. It fails to recognise that society has failed us and disempowered us, and thrown us into a reliance on charity.

The medical model tells us dyslexia is about deficits, discrepancy and disorder. Again this model fails to recognise that it is society that has failed us and disempowered us.

These are societies answers to Dyslexia. Neither are positive, empowering or inclusive.

As the social model of dyslexia says, society disables. That dyslexia is about diversity and difference.

The social enterprise is about the dyslexic community doing it for themselves, Dyslexia is not about discrepancy, disorder and deficits it's about diversity and difference. This model tells us it is society that disables and that begins at school. That's why I say #Vivaladifference.

This disabling starts with an education system that marginalises and fails far to many or us.
