Dyslexia difference or disability?
Hi blog readers hope you are all well
We as dyslexics have to advocate for a more positive social model profile of dyslexia. The old medical model of dyslexia tells us we are disabled and that our brains are broken. That we need remediation and treatment. All the medical model of dyslexia has done is shackle us to negative stereotype profile of dyslexia.
But there is another way more positive way forward. Medical model bad social model rocks. The medical model is one that has been imposed upon us by a non dyslexic society.
The social model is one that has been developed by dyslexics for dyslexics. The social model of dyslexia tells us that #dyslexia is a difference that reflects #diversity.
I am not saying we don't need support in education because we are disabled. We need it because our education system is dyslexia unfriendly. It is our dyslexia unfriendly education system that disables us.
Dyslexia is a difference that reflects diversity vivaladifference.
