through a dyslexic prism

Through a dyslexic prism part 1

We have to move away from the medicalization of dyslexia. It is misleading and unhelpful and has nothing positive to say to dyslexics or about dyslexia. I was talking to a student of mine who had been very reluctant to seek support at university. He said, "nobody likes to think there is something wrong with them". I think this is a shame that many dyslexics feel like this. But it is quite understandable given the fact that so many of us are failed by our education systems.
Dyslexia is not a disease or an incurable illness to be ashamed of. If you are dyslexic it does not mean there is something wrong with us. It means we are different. It means we are part of the diversity which exists within humanity.
Dyslexic diversity, neuro diversity and disability has enabled humanity to thrive and succeed in many ways. Nature would be nothing without diversity. This planet would be a boring place without diversity. Humanity would be a dead end street without that diversity.
Can you imagine how boring world it would be if we all looked the same or all shared the same thoughts, or solved problems in the same way etc. I experience and see the world through a dyslexic prism and that to me is fabtastic.
Through a dyslexic prism part 2
Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly
As a dyslexic this made sense to me. I see and make sense of the world around me through a dyslexic prism. A dyslexic prism which that is unique from any other dyslexic because they make sense and see the world through their own unique dyslexic prisms. Our dyslexic prisms are incomprehensible to non dyslexics as non dyslexic prisms are to we dyslexics? True or false what do you think? Does this even make any sense? PS I never thought is a million years I would agree with Morticia Addams from the Addams Family lol.
Report back on my Pecha Kucha evening
The evening was fabtastic enjoyed the other 7 people presenting their own Pecha Kucha. Pecha Kucha is a very informal way to give a presentation. I think it means chatter or chit chat. Glad to say I was not the only dyslexic presenting. I guess there was about 80 people or so there. For those who have not read my previous blog. Pecha Kucha is a Japanese style for giving presentations.
You select 20 images to present and have only 20 seconds to say something for each image. So basically you have 7 minutes to say what you want to say. Mine was about Unique Dyslexic Get Creative and about our goal of opening a dyslexia creativity and academic support hub for dyslexics is Fife.
It was a really tough thing for me to do. Give me the time and I can talk about dyslexia until the cows come home. Give me a tight time limit now was tough even a minute before I went up to the microphone I was still thinking about what I was going to say lol.
The stage
All the presentations were filmed and will be uploaded to an international Pecha Kucha web site and other sites. I will post a link to the movie in a later blog.

  1. yes the Dyslexic Prism idea makes a tone of sense no two dyslexic's see the world the same way, BUT unlike non dyslexic's we are able to understand each others view points, and even spot another dyslexic who may have been thinking themselves stupid or lazy because that is what non-dyslexic call people who are dyslexic. Its like with reading, some dyslexic's can deal with black font on a white background, but a number of us need colour overlays to make the text stay still or make it simply easier for our minds to read! and again no two dyslexic's will have the same colour overly, my partner has a horrid neon orange were I have an EVIL rose pink (I hate pink), but nether of us can read font via the same overly as easily. that's just a physical example. but mental well with out dyslexic's there wouldn't be e=MC squired Yes Dr Albert Einstein was a dyslexic so that alone should dispel the myth of dyslexic's being stupid. >:(
the thing I really don't get is why suddenly Dr's want to dub it an illness!! yes sure it can be a disability if you never get the chance to be shown how to overcome its problems so you can fully embrace its gifts! but to dub it an illness ughh I wish they would stop looking for medical cures for everything and start finding practical work around like, oh I don't know teach ALL school children as if they were dyslexic so that none of them fall behind, But I guess that would be to much dyslexic common sense for non-dyslexic's in charge of the so called education system. :/
