If humankind fails to work together

Hello to all my followers and friends. How's your bellies for spots lol

If humankind fails to work together to fight climate change. If we continue to enable the already super rich to further enrich them selves. Humankind's reign on planet earth is finished. Greed has an insatiable appetite.

Dyslexia is much more than a label

Hello again, hope you are all well

We are the fab 10%:

Dyslexia to me is more than a label. Dyslexia is a part of who I am not just an add on its is me. Being dyslexic defines me in many ways. Too often we talk about dyslexia like there is me the here is my dyslexia like its something that is standing next to me. But it is not dyslexia is an integral part of me, of every dyslexic and a very important one at that.

I am dyslexic but I do not have dyslexia. There is a difference.

It is not good enough that so many of us end up in prison. 50% of people in prison are dyslexic. It's no longer good enough that our education system marginalises us. It is a waste of our lives and a waste of our potential.

We dyslexics are not inherently criminal.
Many of us leave school with low or no qualifications. We may have struggled with un assessed dyslexia through out all of our education. As a result many of us leave school with low self esteem and self confidence. Then we find it difficult to find employment and succeed in training courses.

I have met with many dyslexics failed by any training for employment they attend simply because no support is available. Trainers are not trained to meet their learning needs.

We dyslexics can end up being marginalised even further and as a result make bad choices that can end up with breaking the law. In general dyslexics have average to high IQs and I don't think any non dyslexic can imagine how it feels to be a bright individual facing seemingly impenetrable barriers that society places in front of us.

Politicians should see dyslexia as a preventative spend issue. Enable us to succeed at school and achieve according to our potential. Nurture dyslexics at school instead of remediating failing us. We could have over 50% of entrepreneurs being dyslexic instead of 35%. Just imaging what a benefit to the Scottish economy that would be. What a preventative spend investment that would be.

I feel sorry for all those non dyslexics out there who will never see the world as I do, who can only see little bits of a big picture I can see and who will never solve problems like I do.

We are the fab 10%. I know for many my words may appear hollow or utter crass lunacy. But it is society that disables dyslexics and this disabling starts from day one at school and an education spectacularly fails too many of us.

We dyslexics succeed across all areas of our society and many do so in spite or our experience of education. #uniquedyslexic #vivaladifference.

Thanks for reading, it would be fab is you could leave a like or join our dyslexic clan.

Many dyslexic can often feel isolated, always remember you are not alone

Hello there to all readers and followers.

Feed back from a few of the dyslexic , neuro diverse university students I have supported.

I am not very good at blowing my dyslexic trumpet but funders now expect people who want to access funding expect applicants, that is me, to show social value. My Unique Dyslexic blog is one place to share my social value.

I find this social value thing all quite embarrassing.

That is the main reason I ask for readers, of my blog and other social media channels to comment, subscribe and like.

Sarah said:
“I had one to one support with Steve from Dyslexia Pathways who was great. We worked on different techniques together such as how to effectively read and way to develop my memory skills. This time last year I was in a mess due to stress and anxiety due to dyslexia and coping with university life. I didn’t feel able to cope. I know now that I have the ability to excel in university.”
Colin said:
"The support and guidance that Steve from Dyslexia Pathways has provided has allowed me to focus my attention on strategies that enable me to overcome my dyslexia using my personal strengths."
Margaret said:
"The dyslexia support that Steve from Dyslexia Pathways gave me increased my confidence in my own abilities and enhanced my self esteem"
Emma said:
"For the first time ever I completed a piece of work with time to spare. This was because I was taught how to structure my time more effectively."
Gary Said:
"Last year before I started working with Steve from Dyslexia Pathways I failed my course and exams. This meant I had to take my first year at university again.  After receiving support from Steve  I managed to pass my exam and course work and move into my second year."
OK, I very much appreciate all your support.

Problems with Home insurance Esure shisters

The flashing has come away, and rain damage.

Hello, I know not dyslexia related but something for us all to watch out for small print

Esure Insurance, what a load, of shisters. We have building and content insurance with Esure. Storm damaged our roof, flashing broken, leaking roof. Esure informed us damage was not due to storm damage. It was not stormy enough. Just normal wear and tear they said. In other words we cannot claim. In other words our buildings and content insurance with Esure is not worth the paper its written on. 100% certain Esure did not explain this to us when we took out our policy with them.

Don't use Esure is my advice

Something about dyslexia for us all to think about

My Dyslexia Pathways CIC logo

Hi blog readers hope you are well

For decades we have had parents of dyslexic kids fighting our education system one at a time. Sometimes they win little victories and get support for their dyslexic kids. Most of the time they face long battles and get nowhere.

Only 19% of dyslexic adults were assessed as dyslexic whilst at school. Just think about that.

We, as dyslexic adults need to get together to build a social movement where we can work together. Work together to bring positive changes to the current education system that, up to now, is still failing too many of our dyslexic children.

Right now, many of us are fighting for positive change from the bottom upwards. We have to influence those who are responsible for developing education policy. This can only be done if we work together and take this to those who make policy.

There also needs to be political will to make the changes to our education system that will enable our dyslexic kids to succeed is school. Right now there is no political will to do this. Only by working together can we influence those who run our education system.

We have to make a much more positive case for supporting our dyslexic kids. A case based on our dyslexic strengths, and not our perceived weaknesses. We have to move away from an old outdated medical model of dyslexia that basically tells us our brains do not work correctly. That says dyslexia is all about deficits, disorder and discrepancy. That somehow we are not normal. That we are broken in some way. What does this say to potential employers about dyslexics? What does this say to our dyslexic kids?

I am not saying dyslexics do not need support at school. What I am saying is we need teachers in every classroom being trained to teach to meet the diversity of learning needs in the class room. To enable teachers to do their job of teaching our dyslexic kids together with their non dyslexic peers in a classroom.

Every day I visit Facebook I read real life stories about dyslexic kids and parents battles to get what is a human right to a good education. Stories about dyslexic kids not wanting to go to school. About parents seeing their children crying and frustration and fear about going to school. This is just not good enough at all.

I believe it is society that disables dyslexics and that's why I promote and support the social model of dyslexia. I am not saying it's a perfect model but it places the responsibility for the failure of our education to meet the learning needs of dyslexic kids  where it belongs. Not on the shoulders of dyslexic kids and parents. But squarely on the shoulders of those who shape our education system and politicians why are responsible for developing and running an education system that fails so many of us.

Dyslexics can and do succeed but many do so in spite of their education not because of it.

#dyslexia is a difference that reflects #diveristy. We need to unleash that potential not remediate or stifle it.

Anyway, #PeaceLoveGrooveyness from me

What is legal can also be morally wrong and no guide to human decency

What is legal can also be morally wrong and no guide to human decency

1 in ten I am dyslexic logo
Hi blog readers hope you are well:

Our governments and laws they create are no guide to human decency and morality:

The Holocaust was legal and people who hid and saved Jewish people were prosecuted as criminals.

Slavery was legal and people who freed slaves were considered to be criminals by the governments of the day.

Segregation and Apartheid was legal and people who fought against it were considered criminals by the governments of apartheid.

Tory government imposed austerity and changes to benefits is responsible for the deaths of 10,000s disabled and vulnerable people.

Some people are calling this government sponsored social murder. I will only add the companies responsible for running this are making tens of millions of pounds sterling from this despicable process.

If we fail to hold our governments to account when they are morally and spiritually bankrupt.

We risk encouraging those who would create a new

Holocaust. Who would enslave free people and who would segregate seek to repeat these crimes against humanity today and in the future.

Thanks for reading, I know its not strictly about dyslexia but I think we as dyslexics have a strong sense of justice. Maybe that because we experience injustice throughout our lives. Or maybe its a dyslexic trait?

what do you think?

please share

Thanks for reading

There are many dyslexic geniuses out there but?

There are many dyslexic geniuses out there but because our education system fails us many never realize that genius

Unique Dyslexic Eye t shirt

Hi blog readers and followers, hope you have had an enjoyable holiday

Scenius is: ‘a group of creative individuals who make up an ‘ecology of talent’.

There are many dyslexic geniuses out there but because our education system fails us many never realize that genius. But it is out there because we know 35% of dyslexics are entrepreneurs.

Dyslexic geniuses that do succeed do so in spite of there experiences in education and not because of it.

If we are ever going to change how society sees dyslexia we must come together and develop our creative dyslexic scenius to do it.

We need to challenge societies medical model of dyslexia that tell dyslexics that dyslexia is about deficits, discrepancy and disorder. This medical model has nothing positive to say to dyslexics or about dyslexia.

This is why I developed the social model of dyslexia together with social enterprise. The social model of dyslexia tells us dyslexia is about diversity and difference and the social enterprise part basically means we can support ourselves to solve the issues we face in a dyslexic unfriendly society.

The social model of dyslexia is our model its provides dyslexics with positive and inclusive vision. It tells it like it is, we struggle at school because our education system is dyslexia unfriendly. It is also neuro diverse and disability unfriendly.

Dyslexics have unique minds, we need to come together to create and utilise our dyslexic scenius to benefit the dyslexic community.

The medical model of Dyslexia has gotten us pretty much nowhere.

just a photo of me with my I am dyslexic logo

Hello all, and good day to all my blog subscribers and readers

I believe the medical model of Dyslexia has gotten us pretty much nowhere in decades. This model defines dyslexia in terms of deficits, discrepancy and disorder. That it is we dyslexics that are the problem. It makes no mention of diversity and difference all the positive aspects of dyslexia. Neither does it recognise the impact of a dyslexia unfriendly society has on the dyslexic community.

That's why my social enterprise, Dyslexia Pathways CIC, (Community Interest Company,) promotes and support the social model of Dyslexia.

We see the social model of dyslexia together with social enterprise offers the dyslexic community a more inclusive, positive and empowering way forward. The social model tells us it is society that disables and here is how society does.

My own research showed only 19% of dyslexic adults were assessed while at school. That the majority of adults assessed as dyslexic were assessed while at university.

But you have to remember only about 5% of undergraduates are dyslexic while in the UK research shows around 10% of the population are dyslexic. Society disables us in so many ways and this disabling starts from day one at school for many of us and does not stop even at higher education level.

An example of society disabling are many. Outdated attitudes towards dyslexia among university staff prevail. Too many view dyslexia as something made up by middle-class “helicopter parents” to gain unfair advantages for their children entering university. That a dyslexia assessment is not the valid medical diagnosis that it actually is. Even where it is accepted as a condition rooted in an inability to match spoken sounds with their written forms, the accommodations made to level the playing field for dyslexic students are often inadequate.

For me dyslexia is no a medical issue. A medical model of dyslexia says dyslexic is about, deficits, disorder and discrepancy. It has nothing positive to offer the dyslexic community. It totally fails to recognise the positive aspects of being dyslexic.

That is why I promote the social model of dyslexia. it recognises the positives, that it is society that disables us. It tells us dyslexia is about diversity and difference, not disability.

What do you all believe? Is dyslexia about deficits, disorder and discrepancy or diversity and difference?
