Dyslexia is about diversity and difference and not deficits, disorder and deficits

Hello all, hope you are all felling fab out there,

My research showed only 19% of dyslexic adults were assessed while at school. This is simply not good enough.

We as dyslexic adults need to get together to build a social movement where we can work together. Work together to bring positive changes to the current education system that up to now is still failing too many of us and our children. 

Right now many of us are fighting for positive change from the bottom upwards. We have to influence those who are responsible for developing education policy. This can only be done if we work together and take this to those who make policy. 

There needs to be political will to make the changes to our education system that will enable our dyslexic kids to succeed is school. Right now there is no political will to do this. Only by working together can we influence those who run our education system.

We have to make a much more positive case for supporting our dyslexic kids. We have to move away from an old outdated medical model of dyslexia that basically tells us our brains do not work correctly. That somehow we are not normal. That we are broken in some way. 

What does this say to potential employers about dyslexics? What does this say to our dyslexic kids? Its a medical model that talks about dyslexia in terms of discrepancy, disorder and deficits. 

Its a three D model that's about as 3D as a blank sheet of paper. If puts a focus on dyslexics as being the problem and totally fails to recognise that dyslexics fail because our education system and society is dyslexia unfriendly.

I am not saying dyslexics do not need support at school. What I am saying is we need teachers in every classroom being trained to teach to meet the diversity of learning needs in the class room. To enable teachers to do their job of teaching our dyslexic kids together with their non dyslexic, neuro diverse or disabled peers in a classroom. All together living, learning and playing together.  

Every day I visit Facebook I read real life stories about dyslexic kids and parents battles to get what is a human right to a good education. Stories about dyslexic kids not wanting to go to school. About parents seeing their children crying and frustration and fear about going to school. This is just not good enough at all. 

I believe it is society that disables dyslexics and that's why I promote and support the social model of dyslexia. I am not saying it's a perfect model but it places the responsibility for the failure of our education to meet the learning needs of dyslexic kids where it belongs. 

Not on the shoulders of dyslexic kids and parents. But squarely on the shoulders of those who shape our education system and politicians why are responsible for developing and running an education system that fails so many of us. 

Dyslexics can and do succeed but many do so in spite of their education not because of it.

Good day to all my blog readers

I can only comment on this from a dyslexic perspective. I believe the medical discrepancy model of Dyslexia has gotten us pretty much nowhere. This model say it's we dyslexics that are the problem. It makes no mention of diversity and difference. It says dyslexia is all out discrepancy, disorder and deficits. 

That's why my social enterprise, Dyslexia Pathways CIC, (Community Interest Company,) promotes and support the social model of Dyslexia. 

We see the social model of dyslexia together with social enterprise offers the dyslexic community a more inclusive, positive and empowering way forward. The social model tells us it is society that disables and here is how society does. 

My own research showed only 19% of dyslexic adults were assessed while at school. That the majority of adults assessed as dyslexic were assessed while at university. 

But you have to remember only about 5% of undergraduates are dyslexic while in the UK research shows around 10% of the population are dyslexic. Society disables us in so many ways and this disabling starts from day one at school for many of us and does not stop even at higher education level.

Hello everyone

Have a fab Easter day lol. Our day was not so hot. Sitting in my chair playing Gods on my switch when Anne called to me upstairs. She sounded a bit panicked.

Of I went bounding up the stairs to go see what was wrong. Opened the bath room door and there was Anne hold the shower door. Its a big old glass door, rather heavy I found out very quickly.

Had a quick look around to assess the situation. Not a very good look as it turned out. My first though was pick up the door and see if I could slide it back it. Boy, was that door heave. 

Got the door up to my face and CRASH, shattered glass went every where. On me, on the bathroom floor, in the bath, the sink and taps and shelves even behind the sink. Thousands upon thousands glass crystals. The glass got stuck under the bath room door, some went down the stairs. Luckily enough neither Anne or I were hurt.

Took me a few seconds to catch up with events. There I am covered and surrounded  in glass wearing a dressing gown and slippers. 

It took 3 hours to clean it up. Our bathroom isn't exactly big either. Then spent an age vacuuming and then the second mishap occurred. The looming vacuum cleaner broke sigh.

I managed to bodge it up and was able to finish getting the shards of glass up. In all it took about 6 hours to sort it out. 

Need to get a new shower door fitted and vacuum cleaner lol. 

Our roast was knackered also.

thats a nice story steve, i too gave up school wen i was 14 if you remember, i brought a guitar wen i was 16 and tried to join my 1st band, of course i was turned down not good enough, so i went to guitar college for a couple of years, where i learned a fair bit joined a band, did a few things then we did a gig for a social club in 2004 where we were asked to be resident band for 2 years so.... theres a little story in a way a little like yours i gave up too, but eventually done something i always wanted to do, good on ya steve, if your ever in edgware look me up

A Flower!

Hello all,

Not strictly about dyslexia but this video concerned me. What do you think?

This video shows a person shooting another person in the back from a front door front door. It concerned me. I tried offering a heads up but all got in response was sarcasm and name calling.

He did tell me he used a paint ball gun and the person being shot in the back. He was wearing padding. But the video does not explain this.

I am a dyslexia and inclusion specialist who has supported both victims of and those who have committed violent crimes. I am not some numpty troll. Below is a link to his video, question.
