Dyslexia: Discrepancy and disorder or diversity and difference? its our choice.......

Hi blog readers hope you are all feeling fab

We need a coherent and globally united dyslexia community so we can fight for positive change for all of us. It seems to me we are all still stuck in a medical \ discrepancy model time warp. We are falling over ourselves trying to prove that dyslexia is a disability. That dyslexia is about discrepancy and disorder.

That is why I and my social enterprise support and promote the social model of dyslexia. Its a model created by dyslexics for dyslexics. It tells us dyslexia is about #diversity and difference. 

We have been trying to solve the issues we face using terminology and ideas that are embedded in medical modal thinking that in my view do not fit or work for us. The idea that dyslexia is a disability is imposed upon us by non dyslexic thinking.

We have to stop thinking in terms of disability and focus on the idea that dyslexia is about diversity and difference. If we are going to build a community do we want one based on a medical \ discrepancy model vision or social model of dyslexia vision?

The lock down and isolation has had an impact on our mental health and well-being no question about that. Unique Dyslexic Eye seeks to address this in three ways. Part of my podcast /

broadcasts features and promotes music written and performed by dyslexic and neuro diverse musicians and poets.  

The other part of the show is aboutraising awareness of the positives that can come with being dyslexic and neuro diverse individual.

Finally, its about getting people together sharing their stories and offering mutual support. Further developing a dyslexic and neurodiverse community.

Just want to bring you news of our new Unique Dyslexic Eye Broadcasting Kickstarter. The idea of this Kickstarter is:

To support the mental health and well being of the dyslexic and neuro diverse communities during Corona virus and after Corona is done.

How we want to do this:

My dyslexia blog has over 270.000 views and I wanted to reach out further to the dyslexic and neuro diverse communities by making it more accessible. So 2019 / 20 I took an HND in Broadcasting as I wanted to set up a dyslexia and neuro diverse podcast and broadcasting station. Many of us are experiencing isolation and it is impacting on our mental health and well being. The irony of this is many from the dyslexic and neuro diverse communities experience isolation throughout their lives. Our goal is to support the dyslexic and other neuro diverse communities during Corona and beyond.

Like with everyone else Corona got in the way of all our lives. For me my university work stopped and I lost my income. My college broadcasting course came to a halt at college and I had to learn from home. Like everyone else I went into lock down in my home March 18th. I needed to keep my dyslexia work and broadcasting course going in some way and so Unique Dyslexic Eye was created. 

It is an irony that many dyslexic and neuro diverse people feel isolated.  Corona has meant that all of us have been left isolated in our homes because of lock down. So the only way to reach out was radio, podcasting and social media. 

The lock down and isolation has had an impact on our mental health and well being no question about that. So the idea is to address this in three ways. Part of my podcast / broadcasts features and promoted music written and performed by dyslexic and neuro diverse musicians and poets. Once the web site is running we will feature creative work the dyslexic and neuro diverse communities. Giving them a forum to show and share their talents. The other part of the show is about raising awareness of the positives that can come with being dyslexic and neuro diverse individual. Finally its about getting people together sharing their stories and offering mutual support. 

I already have a strong social media presence. For example my dyslexia blog has had over 270.000 views. So I want to further develop the social media platform so people can support each other and reach out for support.

To do this we want to try and raise £750 to help pay for equipment and costs of running the station. Up until now I have been funding this from my own pocket.

Unique Dyslexic Eye has been running for just over a month and we have already had over 200 downloads; Here is a link to my podcasts and radio shows on Spotify:

This campaign will be officially launching in a couple days. I am seeking seeder to share the news, to possible donate to Unique Dyslexic Eye so we can keep our broadcast / podcasts going on a regular basis.  Also looking for possible collaborators to help with this, The campain lasts 30 days. Last year I took an HND in Broadcasting. My dyslexia blog has over 270.000 views and I wanted to reach out further into the dyslexic and neuro diverse communities. 

Like everyone else Corona got in the way.

My university work and in college work came to a halt. I have to start shielding in my home March 18th. I needed to keep my dyslexia work going in some way and so Unique Dyslexic Eye was created. Corona has meant that many of us have been left isolated in our home because of lockdown. So the only way to reach out was radio, podcasting and social media. 

The lock down and isolation has had an impact on our mental health no question about that. So the idea was to address this in two ways. Part of my podcast / broadcasts feature music written and performed by dyslexic and neuro diverse musicians. Giving them a forum to show and share their talents. The other part of the show is about raising awareness of the positives that can come with being dyslexic and neuro diverse individual. 

Well right now I am doing the whole show from my laptop, I dont have a proper microphone to use, no mixing desk etc. I had access to all the equipment needed at the college.

I have paid for the Adobe Audition software and for the Unique Dyslexic website myself. Even though I have had no income since my dyslexic work stopped. I work freelance so no regular income. So money raised will help develop the shows further.

I want to develop this into a global community for dyslexic and neuro diverse communities.

I want to try and tackle the isolation. But also it is well known being creative is good for mental health. So Unique Dyslexic Eye and work to enable people to overcome mental health issues. 

I am going to re brand the Unique Dyslexic website so we can support people who are creative in dyslexic and neuro diverse communities. More to the point Unique Dyslexic Eye's social model of dyslexia and social enterprise focus provides a more inclusive and positive vision that challenges the idea that dyslexia and neuro diversity is about disability.

Scenius is a group of creative individuals who make up an ‘ecology of talent’. 

There are many dyslexic geniuses out there but many never realize that genius. But it is out there because we know 35% of entrepreneurs. If we are ever going to change how society sees dyslexia we must come together and develop our creative dyslexic scenius to do it.

In other news I have decided to set up a Kickstarter to see if i can attract funding for Unique Dyslexic Eye podcasting and broadcasting. I completed the application yesterday. I am just waiting to see if Kickstarter will accept it.

I am basically seeking funding to pay for hardware and software for podcasting and broadcasting as well as for developing the idea further into a and online community to tackle isolation for dyslexic and neuro diverse communities during this corona.

Further news on this my proposal has been accepted by Kickstarter. I will be launching in a few days and here is the link to my page.

Life through my unique dyslexic prism

I am a fab one in ten dyslexic

I have no problem with being dyslexic. I am very happy that I see and experience the world through my dyslexic prism.

I do have a problem with our #Dyslexia unfriendly education system and society that quite simply has failed us. 

#dyslexia is about diversity and difference and it is society that disables us.


That's why I, and my organization Dyslexia Pathways CIC, say the #dyslexia is a difference that reflects diversity and not dyslexia is a condition that disables us.


The negative medical discrepancy model has also resulted in:


Over 50% of people in our prisons are dyslexic


Dyslexics are 6 times more likely to be long term unemployed than non dyslexics


Only 19% of dyslexic adults were actually assessed as dyslexic while at school

Many of us leave school with long term mental health issues, poor self confidence and low self esteem because of our negative experiences in education

This is not acceptable and cannot continue.

We ourselves have to change how we think and talk about #dyslexia, the medical discrepancy model way has not worked for us. Society will not just do it for us.


All the medical discrepancy model has done is isolated and marginalized many of us. Its created a negative medical discrepancy model stereotype around dyslexics that disables us in our own eyes and in the eyes of society. It is a model that has been imposed upon us by society.


We need to challenge it and fight for change because if we don't future generations of dyslexic kids will continue to be failed. Of course some positive change is happening. However, it is far to slow and we have had to fight for that change every step of the way

We need to celebrate and recognize dyslexic culture and all that dyslexics have achieved across all areas of society.

That's why my social enterprise Dyslexia Pathways CIC supports and promotes the social model of dyslexia and social enterprise model. It is a more positive and inclusive way forward.

A model that celebrates and embraces dyslexia and recognizes our diversity, neuro diversity and difference. One that does not try to turn us into copies of non dyslexics.

More importantly its a model created by dyslexics for dyslexics.
